This table looks at entering into an employment contract as part of a wider process of relationship-building

We think about employment contract(ing) not just as a noun - the contract itself - but also a verb - the act of going into contract. This is the relationship-making process: from the moment that you propose an offer of employment through to the moment that you bind your commitment in a signed contract.

This is a critical window in the wider journey of an individual’s relationship with the organisation and its mission, where the way that relationship is developed, and its terms mutually reviewed and agreed, set the tone and expectations for the relationship going forward.

We have set out below some typical stages of employment contract(ing) process. We have included what organisations conventionally do and reasons for these conventions. We have also included some case studies of how some organisations are trying to reimagine these processes in ways which are more reciprocal, transparent, and trauma-informed. We also share our learnings on potential legal and operational considerations.

For help on how to use this table (a Notion database), please see here.
